I threw the rods in the truck this afternoon and took off to try and catch something from the bank. Ended up at the Minnehaha FWA Island Pit and as soon as I pulled in it started to pour. I went on out and on my first cast I caught a little bass on my pink G&G Inline Steelhead spinner. I made a few more casts and then went back to the truck as I was getting soaked.
Decided to head back east and ended up at Airline Lake in Greene-Sullivan SF. Had made a few casts from the dock when a guy pulled up and joined me. He was using floating powerbait fished on the bottom and said he had caught 1 that morning this way. We were talking about catching the big holdovers and he informed me that he has caught several, including a 7 3/4 pounder, but it had been probably 5 years since he had caught a big one. After a while I decided to move to the north ramp. I was still casting the pink inline and had tried several different depths and retrieves when I noticed a couple fish hit topwater. I cast again and this time started reeling as soon as the bait hit the water. Right when it got to shore a nice rainbow come up and tried to grab it but didn't get hooked up. It stayed there at the bank, but when I moved again to cast it took off like a torpedo. I made another cast with the same retrieve and this time a much bigger trout followed it in, that water is so clear that I could see it coming, but when it got to shore it did the same as the smaller trout; grabbed the tail but missed the hook. Doh! This would have been my personal best rainbow trout, it even had the hooked nose. I'm guessing around 5 pounds, maybe bigger. I made dozens more casts, but never seen another one.
I'm gonna try and get over to Island or Airline again this fall and try for one of the big ones again. I'll probably put a line out deep and then keep casting that G&G Inline.
I was using the pink one, I might have to get an orange one to try too. That seems to be the preferred powerbait color at least.
