I decided to take a night off from sitting a in a tree stand and do a ground sit instead. I have killed far more deer in my life from the ground than I have from a stand although I hunt from stand much more. I am firm believer that ground hunting is way too overlooked by many hunters. It's generally much more exciting too. Anywho.....
I decided to sit on the ground in a spot where 2 fencerows "T". One field was standing corn, the other was standing beans, and the third was picked corn. The main fenceline runs between two woods' that I hunt that are about 300yds apart. I cleared out shooting lanes so that I would be able to shoot into all three fields. I also ended up getting poison ivy In the corner of the standing corn, the corn was pretty short and there was tall grass as well as an oak tree dropping acorns. At about 5:30 I heard some crashing coming though the corn so I grabbed my bow and got ready. A medium doe stepped out and was walking right to me and I thought she was going to try and jump the fence 5' in front of me! But, she stopped and kept looking back and then a fawn stepped out with her. By this time she was at about 8 yds broadside staring right at me but not at all noticing that I'm even there. Just as I was about to draw on her I heard more noise in the corn so I waited to see what was coming. It turned out to be a really big doe. She is standing behind the other two as the other two are eating acorns off the ground and then she looks right at me and doesn't notice me either. I wanted to shoot her but she continued walking and then jumped the fence about 15 yards to my left. Now, she is getting close to being directly down wind of me so I now I decide I better just shoot the medium one or else my cover is going to get bown. So at 8 yds I draw and they don't even hear me!! Whisker biscuits are worth their weight in gold!! I'm now thinking this girl is a goner I let the arrow fly and double lung her and she runs about 20 yds and dies in the cut corn about 20 yds from me. At this point it's only 5:30 so I decided I would just stay put and see what else happens...Good thing I did! About a half hour later, 4 does are working their way up the fencerow to me and they stop and just stare towards my direction but I know there is no way they can see. So I keep looking towards the woods behind me to see what they are looking at. I see nothing?? The deer stand there motionless for at least 5 minutes and then all of a sudden I hear soft footsteps coming down the fencerow to my left. It's a coyote! I'm trying to get my bow ready as he is walking past me at 5 yds and then I hurry and get drawn. I ended up trying to shoot him at about 10 yds but shot high because I was in such a hurry and he was trotting at that point. Once again, when I drew at 5 yds he never heard a thing! Incredible! Anyhow, he continued to try to chase the deer all around the field and then gave up. Then a doe with 2 fawns came out and he tried to put a sneak on one of the fawns to kill it but he did not succeed. Crazy, but a very memorable hunt. I love ground hunts
Here's the doe:
Did you notice all the horns in background (wall and floor)? Those are my buddies. He has shot about 5 deer over 150" and several 135"-150" deer. They were all legally taken. He has some really good urban hunting ground that produces giants every year that he is required to kill several does on plus he can take a buck but he only gets to do it all over thanksgiving weekend.
