its a dog for 2 reasons, tail is to short and thin. Second when a cougar, mountain lion, puma whatever you like walks slowly enough to take a picture, their tails are level with there body, considering they are a predator and want to keep their presence on the down low when walking through brush tall enough to hide them but short enough to see a tail sticking up high. Just my opinion.

It looks like it was landing from a jump or run. Maybe it was chasing something. I don't know but haven't seen anymore

I agree; looks like it's running, jumping, or something. Definitely not just "walking by" the camera. Here's another pic I just stumbled across for those saying the tails too short...

The way the fur is and the tail tip really looks like a mountain lion, and the amount of muscle and the way it appears to be puncing really makes me think lion. If you look at pictures of a pitbull running, which is the only dog I can think of that would be that muscular, the muscles are much more defined, less rounded like those a cat. I'm convinced it's a cougar.

One of my biggest problems with believing its a lion is the time of day the picture was taken. If the timestamp is correct, then it was almost noon. I just think that a cat would be hunkered down somewhere during the middle of the day. Much more likely to be moving at dawn, dusk, and night.

By the orientation of the tail, I am saying dog.

The picture right above prooves the possibility that it is a cougar tail
