A buddy and I decided to hang tree stands yesterday in clay county on the big walnut creek. Not sure why but we picked one of the hottest days. As soon as we get there we seen a nice 8 and a small herd of does. And the 2 1/2 hours we were out there, it poured the entire time. The one day it really rains in the middle of a drought we are hanging stands. Felt good but the lighting wasn't pleasant while in the tree. Anyone scouted yet?

2 1/2 Hours of RAIN? Wow. I can't even imagine what that's like. We didn't get a drop that day......just some thunder and lightning and then it moved on. If things stay the same, water sources will definitely be the ticket this fall. I was checking out the pond the other day and a doe just stood there and watched me until Max and me left....then she went down to drink. We had 8 does/fawns in the yard yesterday evening. I think the drought is making them let their guard down just to get something green to eat and a drink.

Yeah this drought is hard on them. And greenedog is right. I will probably be huntin close to a creek or pond and close to a bedding area. I'm sure a deer wouldnt want to travel very far from its bed when it is hot and dry......atleast not til it gets dark. I hate nocturnal deer. It is so frustrating trying to hunt them. I saw one decent buck in daylight in one of the places that i have permission to hunt, he was a small 8. And on the backside of another small property i hunt, there was a BIG tall 10 or 12 standing in someones front yard eating apples.I hope i get to see him again. I need to set my trail camera up soon

Well the creek did not come up. So if the drought stays, we may not have a creek in the fall. Still have August to make it through. I've never hunted this property but it looks great except for the west Virginia style hills. Rough carrying stands through that.

I know what your talkin about with the hills..there are some places in the Hoosier national that are straight up and down.. but i havent deer hunted in there before, i squirrel hunt in there and sometimes look for sheds and mushrooms. And imagine dragging a 250 lb buck up and down those hills! I thought about huntin in there one time and i think if i killed one i would probably just hang it from a tree skin it ,quarter it, then take off the loins, the front shoulders and the head(if it was a buck) in a bag or somethin. But i havent found a good spot to hunt on public land yet.I never seem to see any deer in there.

Just hung another stand yesterday. It was a lock on but holy cow was it hot. Put it up in staunton, I'm gona take pics but it looks like fall in these woods already. Hope most the trees live through this drought. The creek is bone dry and the leaves are crunchy. It is loud just walking through the woods, almost like fall time.

Maybe the deer will be on their feet more this year, since the crops arent doing good. Usually the deer will stay in the corn most of the day.But this year it is not as tall and there is not as much food for them as far as corn or soybeans. There are tons of acorns though. And hickory nuts. This will be a good year for squirrel huntin.

Since there is a drought, would a bucket of water be considered baiting?
