The season for Mayfly Rigs and bottom bouncers has come to Lake Erie's western basin fishing grounds. With some of Indiana's finest U.C. fisherman on board, we headed to an area known for May walleye near West Sister Island called the Gravel Pit. We would not be disappointed with our choice. Casting gold bladed weapons and drifting bottom bouncers we had a fun filled day catching walleye and sharing fishing stories. The morning was partly cloudy with 2 foot waves, but the afternnon brought partly sunny skies and calm conditions. Most of our Weapon fish came on an eight count and these active fish in the upper water column were hungry with many of them being hooked deep in the mouth. A small piece of worm on the weapon worked fine. Bottom Bouncers with copper or gold spinners were working. Favored spoons for my trolling friends were smaller sizes of Stingers and Fintails, run off Jet-Divers in No. 20 or No. 40 sizes. Several good trolling reports came in from the area around A-Can We ended the day with 26 walleye, that weighed 94 pounds at Szuch's Bait & Fish Cleaning. Our biggest fish was 27 inches and came on a purple hair jig, caught by the Capt on his 2nd cast of the day. Must have been beginners luck. Tight lines...
