Chase got home from school this evening and we were discussing where to go hunting. We decided to split up and I went outside to think about where I wanted to go try and I just happened to see a tom out in the field across the road from the house. I holler at Chase and tell him I'm gonna grab a hen deke and go set up along a little woods where we've been seeing a strutter in the evenings....he thought it sounded good...so I threw on the camo, grabbed my double D mouth call, a Cherokee Sports hen, the 20 gauge, and off I went. I set the decoy in the field and wiggled my way back into some grass against a little maple tree. As soon as I set down I made a few soft yelps and then shut up. I heard walking behind me in the leaves and thought it might be a turkey....but then it got within 5 yards and I still couldn't see anything...so I assumed it was a chipmunk or something else small. All of a sudden a hen appears in front of me! That was what had walked by me, but she blended in so well in the over grown woods that I hadn't seen her at all. She walks up to the decoy and then just feeds on by. I hear Kim pull up from dropping Colton off at a friends(I'm only a couple hundred yards from the house) and she's getting the mail...and about that time I hear and feel drumming to my right! I can see the tom coming down the edge of the field....I've got a briar bush between him and me...but I go ahead and cock the twenty and aim at him....he's not getting away without some lead headed his way! By then the hen had gone back in the woods....I swear the decoy looked just like the hen had.....the tom is drumming so hard that I can feel him through the ground and my hearts about to beat out of my chest.....and the tom struts right up to the decoy! He relaxes for a split second and I pull the trigger. He dropped dead in his tracks...didn't even twitch. I'm hoping that Chase is filming from the house so I jump up and give some whoops his way....but it wasn't the case....he hadn't even heard my shot and was surprised when I called to tell him I had a dead bird.
20lbs 11"beard 1"spurs
Ended up being only an 18 yard shot and about all the lead went to his head. Those Winchester 3" #5 Supremes just match up great with that little gun for some reason.
This was the first time all season I went without a camera and wouldn't you know everything would go like it's suppose to!
I checked him in online which literally took about 30 seconds. SWEET!
