Just a heads up that there is a House Bill 1221 up for consideration in Indiana that would make it illegal to "spotlight." It's currently legal to do this here as long as you don't have a weapon in your vehicle. The bill has been amended to protect hunting furbearers with a spotlight. www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2012/HB/HB1221.1.htmlProvides that a person who, between October 1 and January 15, shines a spotlight, searchlight, or other artificial light upon a wild bird or wild animal for the purpose of locating a wild bird or wild animal commits a Class C infraction. Establishes certain exceptions. Requires a court to suspend for two years the hunting, fishing, and trapping license privileges of a person who incurs a second conviction or judgment for shining a light on a wild bird or wild animal. Provides that a law enforcement officer who witnesses a person in a vehicle shining a light upon a wild bird or wild animal in a prohibited manner may search the vehicle for a firearm, bow, or crossbow. Allows a court to suspend certain fish and wildlife license privileges for two years for a violation of a wildlife protection law.

I go spotlighting alot, saw 42 in less than an hour last weekend. anyway, on the farm at night when checking cows we use a spot light, how exactly could they tell the difference?

They think they'll cut down on poachers if they make it illegal. Little do they realize that poachers are going to use one anyway and people like us won't even be able to shine.

I never understand these laws aimed to stop criminals from doing something like poaching. don't they understand that criminals do not follow the law. its the same thing as outlawing guns. criminals will still find ways to get them and then us law abiding citizens will be without.

I am a habitual spotlighter. I've been doing it for years. I've had my vehicle searched many times by police and conservation officers just out doing their job. I would be greatly disappointed if Indiana took this right away from me. I can't see the law accomplishing much of anything. You are always going to have the illegal harvesting of deer. There are thousands like me who "shine" without breaking any laws just because it is another form of scouting what deer frequent your hunting area and surrounding areas. Shame on Indiana for considering this!

I'm not a fan of the bill either....or any new laws that aren't needed for that matter. From what I've seen by doing a quick search around the web is that the only proponents of this bill are trophy deer hunters who don't anyone getting a sneak peak at their latest livestock. Just my opinion.
