Was taking my son to a birthday party this afternoon, and while driving out my driveway I noticed something crossing my driveway . As I got closer it ran back down into a deep ditch. I got out to make sure I saw what I thought I saw and a beautiful cock pheasant flushed and flew out into my pasture . I presume that someone had released some or one had gotten loose, beause we don't have any around here. Got a pic on my phone but very hard to see.

Wow! I haven't seen one around here since I was a kid. I remember kicking one up at the end of our hayfield when I was a kid and we'd see them sometimes going to my Grandpa's cabin south of Lyons. Wouldn't that be something if they could make a comeback around here? On a side note.....I have heard that the DNR is making an attempt to restore gamebird habitat on the following local properties...Hillenbrand, Chinook, Minnehaha, Glendale, and Goose Pond. If you look at Hillenbrand on google earth you can see where they've killed off and burnt large areas that will be replanted in native/praire grasses.

Praire Grove's a hunting preserve, meaning they put the birds out and you hunt them. Hopefully some that aren't harvested are surviving in the wild though. I hear that some do survive at Glendale's put and take hunts. Jon's about 8 miles east of me here in Greene County.

Hadn't seen hide nor feather of this critter all winter, even having ran beagle dogs several times and even two quail hunts. Got home from work today around 4pm and there he was in my yard. After parking the car we watched him pick his way through the corn stubble in front of our house. Can't see how it could be a different one but really surprised he made it through the winter especially with all the predators around here.
