Well i went up to crane today for their opening day of firearm and it ended up working out. We got to crane at 1 AM and slept in the truck until they let us out of the parking lot at 5:30 and i was in the tree by 6. I didnt see or hear anything early in the morning and most of the time was spent hugging the tree because of the wind. at about 2 the sun came out and the shots started ringing out. at 2:30 this guy stepped out and since it was going to be tagged as a military refuge hunt i took him. 8 hours in the stand ended up paying off! He got aged and was actually only a 1 1/2 year old. would have been a monster in a few years.

Way to go! Congrats! That's a monster 1.5 yr old. How could that thing go from being a button buck the year before to that? Must be eating good down there!

Thanks guys. Yea when I found out it was only 1.5 year old I was stunned and I'm puzzled as to how it got that big. The only food in that area is grass acorns and persimmons.

that is a 1.5 yr old buck from Crane, they can be bigger than that, same thing in Big Oaks, I've seen a couple nicer than that one from good areas

There is no doubt in my mind that that deer is only 1.5 yrs old. A few years ago my buddy shot a 9 pointer that had a nice rack but lacked in mass. We had it aged by three different professionals and all of them said it was 1.5 yrs old. It's hard to believe but bucks with proper genetics and high protein diets can and will grow good racks quickly.
