This was my first year turkey hunting. I got one in the spring with my f-i-l, so I figured I'd see if I could get one during the fall season as well. A buddy of mine had been seeing them on his family's farm (he actually got his first ever bird with a bow a couple weeks ago) so I asked if we could hit the woods on Saturday to see if we could get one. We got to his blind around 7:00 and we waited for the woods to wake up. We thought we heard a few flying down, but weren't positive. We did some sporadic calling hoping that they might hear us. I couldn't get comfy in the blind, so I got out and leaned against a tree that was in front of the blind. About 9:00 I saw some birds crossing the railroad behind a pond about 150-200 yards to my left. I let him know and he did a little calling. I saw them walking along the edge of the pond and hoped they'd come up the hill to see what was going on. I saw a head peek up over the hill and I leaned my head out to see what it was, and it got spooked. I figured we were busted at that point. While I was waiting to see if any other birds would come up the hill he had a little six-pointer walk behind his blind. He drew on it, but didn't let one fly, because he didn't have a good shot. I looked over to my left again and saw two birds on the hill. The first one was about twenty-five yards away and when I saw the beard I pounded him. I checked him in at the locker plant outside of Bloomfield, but they didn't weigh him. They said since it is deer season they don't have their turkey scales set up. I was a little pissed, but oh well.
We cut out the breast once we got back to his house and my mom cooked one up yesterday for dinner. I have to saw that it was pretty darn tasty and everyone else enjoyed it as well.
