This archery season I shot 2 deer (a doe and a 6 point). I shot both deer with a NAP 3-blade spitfire. The first deer I shot had a great blood trail (double lung), but the second deer I shot I didn't recover. I take the blame for not finding the second deer because I made a spine shot. She dropped in her tracks and stayed down for about 3 min.s. but then she got up and ran away. Her blood trail dried up at about 50 yards. The next weekend I saw her when in my stand (just out of range), and she was walking around as if she hadn't been shot. I know I made a bad shot, but it seems like a should have found her. A week later I bought some Magnus Stinger Buzzcuts. I think if I used the buzzcuts before I might have found the deer because i wouldn't have lost the kinetic energy and would have achieved better penetration into the spine. After this situation I became curious about what kind of broadheads you guys use.

All about shot placement. Just about every broadhead will kill a deer.

For all you guys that are using open-on-impact broadheads...listen up! My best friend had a buck that was every bit of 170" (if not more) pinpointed to where it would come out and feed in the same field almost every evening for 3 weeks prior to the opening of archery season. We had trail cam pics and everything on the whereabouts of this deer. Well, on opening day of archery last fall he was in stand impatiently waiting for the buck to come out and feed. He had hung a stand about 20 yds off the trail the buck would use every time. Finally, the buck was coming right down the trail and he made a perfect shot. He did the old fist pump thinking he just downed a big one. He got went to track the deer...no blood! How? About 100 yds from where he shot the buck he found his arrow which told the entire story. The broadhead never opened and only made about a 2" penentration into the deer! We were all huge fans of mechanical broadheads up until this point. All my friends have since thrown them in the trash. Expensive trash! If only he had used fixed broadheads that day he now would be showing off pics instead of talking about the big one that got away.
Here's another problem with expanding broadheads...they do alot of internal damage, which may seem good but not always. If you make a bad shot and hit the deer towards the back end, typically this would result in a wounded deer that probably survives. With expandables, it'll do enough damage to totally disrupt the deers ability to function and generally will result in a slow painful death and not being found by the hunter until too late. I will stick to fixed blades because there is less that can go wrong and I have yet to lose a deer (knock on wood).

I do agree that about any broadhead can kill a deer as long as you have good shot placement, but with a good cut-on-contact, you can have a bigger area to shoot, as in the shoulder... As shown in this G5 striker vid

Im just going to stick with my rages. They work great for me. Ill be singing a different tune when i loose a deer but so far theyve helped more than hurt. The spike i killed last year on youth day wouldnt have been found if it was for the rage. At the last second the buck moved as i released. The arrow went in just past the rib cage and came out in his ham. If i wouldnve had a small fixed blade the blade wouldntve hit the diaphram and killed him as fast

i believe the rage 2 will work as long as you completely stay away from the shoulder...with the design unless they are turned perfect they will deflect plus they dont penetrate through bone...alot morer shooting angles if you shoot a good fixed bade...also i bet your spike was quartering to you, with a G5 striker you coulda just shot through his shoulder and no worries (that is if he was quartering)
