Way to go Troy! Saturday was an exciting hunting day for me but didn't result in a filled tag. Saturday morning I had a buck that I have been chasing for 3 years at 70 yds with a hot doe. He's roughly a 170 inch 11 point. I couldn't get him or her in any closer but was still exciting nonetheless.
Then, Saturday evening I decided to sit on the ground where 2 fencerows join together. One of the fencerows shoots off my woods about 100 yds before meeting the other fencerow. This spot gets tons of traffic but there are no trees to put a stand in so you are confined to ground hunting. Well, about an hour before dark a 120" 8 pointer steps out of the back of the woods. I have the Primos calls app for my iPhone that I have used religiously this year with some success. Well, when that buck came out of the woods I started using a doe can to get his attention. He didn't respond. So, I few minutes later I canned him again, he still didn't respond until I followed it up with a buck roar and he then jerked his around and looked right at my direction but he was focused on something further on down along the woods that I couldn't see from my position. I continue to follow the same grunting/canning procedure but he ends up slipping out of site into the woods. About 10 minutes later I see a deer coming out of the woods right at me with its head down. I glass him with my binocs but couldn't see the rack with his head down in the corn stubble and I was assuming it was the buck that was just out in the field. All of a sudden he raises his head up and its a giant 8 pointer and he's coming right to me! I believe he heard me calling that whole time and was coming to the calls. He starts trotting to me and at about 80 yds away I make my draw to be ready. By the way, when I first got there to sit I had some fence in the way of one of my shooting lanes and decided to cut and remove it to get a clean shot which also gives the deer an easy crossing of the fence. Well, he stops at about 60 yds and is looking right at me and then puts his head down and starts sniffing the ground again. I couldn't hold the bow back any longer so I let up. Instantly, he comes sprinting right for the opening in the fence (which, incidently, is where I'm sitting on the ground). I try to redraw immediately but he is already at 25 yds and at this point I'm crapping down my leg because this deer is looking as if he is gonna run my over. He finally sees me at this point and before I can get fully drawn he starts hitting the brakes. His back legs were digging in to stop while his front legs were churning like crazy to turn him around the other way. Unfortunately I didn't get to shoot but it was a hunt I'll never forget especially since it was a 145 - 150 inch 8 point! I've seen this buck so many times over the last couple of years but have never had him up close. I was glad to have the opportunity to encounter him cuz usually I only see him when I'm passing by in my truck on the way to town He's not the biggest buck in the area but for an 8 pointer he's huge.
