This really surprises me, I figured it would take a while before it was actually opened to the public. From the DNR; New Fish and Wildlife Area opens Sunday Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area, a new Division of Fish and Wildlife property being developed near Terre Haute, will open to the public Sunday, Aug. 15. The current site encompasses 2,400 acres along the west bank of the Wabash River between Terre Haute and West Terre Haute. Earlier this summer, Gov. Mitch Daniels announced an initiative to expand Wabashiki by acquiring 43,000 acres of floodplain land along a 94-mile river corridor from Shades State Park in Montgomery County to Fairbanks Landing Fish and Wildlife Area south of Terre Haute. All types of legal hunting will be permitted in Wabashiki but the most plentiful species are deer, waterfowl, woodcock, squirrel, turkey and furbearers. Hunters must sign in at the self-service check station located on the south side of US 40 in West Terre Haute, which has a kiosk showing a property map. Hunters must use non-toxic shot. Fishing in the Wabash River and the 7-acre gravel pit on the property will be allowed. Species available include bluegill, crappie, bass and catfish. No sign-in is required for fishing. The southern portion of the property along U.S. 40 offers excellent bird watching opportunities for many species of wetland birds. Target shooting is prohibited, as are camping, off-road vehicle use, and swimming. The Division of Fish and Wildlife’s partners in acquiring Wabashiki include Indiana Heritage Trust, Vigo County Parks, American Electric Power Service Corporation and The Nature Conservancy. As with all Fish and Wildlife Areas in Indiana, there is no charge for entry. Access to Wabashiki will be primarily by the waters of the Wabash River until further facilities are developed. For a map of the property, along with further rules and regulations, please see www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/6188.htm

Wouldn't it be kinda hard to hunt public land, cause anybody could just walk through the area and scare the animals away? i have never hunted on public land so i don't know.

you have to find a spot where someone wont do that. most people wont be walking around on a day that they know hunting is going on.

I may run over an check it out, but that place is a little close to town and will be packed most of the time I am sure.. Hopefully it isn't and it becomes a nice sleeper hole like other FWA's in this area but odds are against it. Weird that there is only two parking areas, most of the land is south of the southern parking area. Must be more flood plain then anything down there.

FB, by looking at aerials of the property 10 sounds about right, there is a lot of land, but a lot of open flood plain by looks. I am sure the state has some formula that for so many acres of woods so many hunters are allowed. Fairbanks is 8000 acres roughly with probably 6000+ being hardwoods. Wabashiki is 2,400 acres with what looks like less than 500 actual wooded. The flood plains when not under water will be nice and thick and provide lots of cover with bushes and grasses, but those bushes and grasses don't stop a slug. The state will normally always side on the side of safety.

I know they land & the land owners around it as i own land right next to it. i think well do good down there/last month as we know the trails they run on. it is a far walk or thake boat or got to cross a creek to get on the back side. know parking on I-70 = TICKIT know parking or trying to thake back road in old man mason well run you off/call police ,he owns the road going thru/down the middle of the wabashiki and the DNR does not own the road, wich i know sound weard but mason wanted to keep road that being he owns land still down there so hes not land lock.

THe 7 acre lake has a lot of water moccassin. Just a word of caution. Great piece of land until it floods. Most of it will be under water in the spring or after big rains.
