I dont know if any of you guys do this, but Mepps the famous fishing lure company actually BUYS squirrel tails off hunters to use as skirts for their lures. If i remember right we usually get about a quarter apiece for good tails, or you can trade em for lures. When we do this, we just cut the tail off at the end, and we take 3/4 in pvc pipe and put the tails in them, then just throw em in the freezer till you get enough to send in. here is an article i found on it. Mepps Squirrel Tail spinners have long been a staple of fishermen everywhere. To get the needed tails for their spinners, Mepps pays up to 26 cents for them. They buy fox, black and gray squirrel tails. If you hunt squirrels you can sell the tails to Mepps for cash or trade for double the price in Mepps spinners. It is a great way to use the tails after you have the squirrels for lunch. Mepps encourages hunters to send tails of squirrels hunted for food and does not want you to shoot squirrels just for the tails. Many other materials have been tried for spinner dressing, but squirrel tails have proved to be the best. Recycle the tails of any squirrels you kill. You can get more information on this program at www.mepps.com/squirrels or you can call 800-713-3474. Mepps, owned by Sheldons', Inc. 626 Center St., Antigo, WI 54409-2496. Please note: It is illegal to sell squirrel tails in CA, ID, OR, & TX If you tie your own flies or make your own lures, consider squirrel tail hair for dressing them.

I have heard about this before. I always thought it was good of them to encourage hunters to only send in tails from squirrels that were hunted for food. I like their lures too.
