One man died and another was rescued Saturday after falling through ice while fishing in northwestern Greene County.
Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the death of a 77-year-old Jasonville man, whose body was recovered from an ice-covered pond.
Delmar W. Scott was found at approximately 9:20 p.m. by Linton Fire Department personnel at the bottom of an ice-covered pond near County Road 1500W and County Road 500N in Greene County, according to Max Winchell, DNR Conservation Public Information Officer.
The pond is about seven miles south of Jasonville.
Family members became concerned when Scott did not return from ice fishing, Winchell said.
Scott left to go to the pond at around 2 p.m.
"Family members went to the location and found a capsized boat on the ice-covered pond," he said.
The Greene County Sheriff's Department received a 911 call at 8:43 p.m. reporting the incident.
Scott was not wearing a life jacket, according to Winchell.
Indiana Conservation Officers, and personnel from the Linton Fire Department, Linton Police Department, Greene County Sheriff's Department, Wright Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Greene County Coroner's Office all responded to the scene.
Earlier in the evening, a man was brought to safety after falling through the ice on Shakamak Lake at Shakamak State Park near Jasonville.
Thomas A. Case, 43, of Columbia City, had been ice fishing, alone on Shakamak Lake, when he broke through the ice shortly before dark. The initial 911 call came into the Clay County Sheriff's Department at 8:14 p.m.
"Mr. Case was able to get himself to the shore. The shore that Mr. Case reached was a difficult area for rescue workers to reach due to the location and terrain. He was located by a Shakamak Park employee at approximately 9 p.m." Winchell stated.
Shakamak park employees, Indiana Conservation Officers, Jasonville City Police, Sullivan County Sheriff's Deputies, and Lewis Township Volunteer Fire Department were all involved in the search and rescue of Case.
"The area could only be reached on foot and Mr. Case had to be carried to the nearest road," Winchell pointed out.
Case was taken by Air Evac helicopter to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis.

This is very sad, but not surprising. I took this pic at Shakamak on Friday. There were 4 guys out in the middle of Lenape, even though the ice was pretty much gone around the edge. I also seen where people had been fishing Shakamak Lake, even though there was a large area of open water!
