So as some may have seen on FB I will be heading to Texas for a pig hunt. I won a $800 hunt that includes food, lodging, 2 pigs, unlimited piglets and a daily varmint I believe. I was still a little hesitant on claiming the prize. I didn't know if I wanted to hold out for the Canadian black bear but after some more researching I need to get some stuff before heading to Canada to hunt. So Texas it is. I will probably drive it too. 2 day trek for sure but I want to see Texas and not from sky. The place I'm going to is the one I mentioned above and is linked as well; Independence Ranch. This won't be completely free as I'm still responsible for gratuities and cleaning fees. I'm debating on what weapon(s) to take. My options right now are a bow/pistol combo, one of the AR's (308, 6.8 or 7.62x39; I have a Grendel but it's a 24" barrel and it weighs a metric ton), lever gun in 44 or 35 Rem or just go with the Ultra Slug 12/pistol combo. As much as I wanted to take a trip this year and this would've been a good one I just don't think it will happen. I have 2 years to use the hunt so right now I'm going to plan on either an early hunt in 2020 (February) or a late hunt in 2020 (October). Really don't want to go to Texas in the middle of summer. I'm leaning more towards the February hunt.

To be expected I did not draw a tag this year either.

I wasn't exactly right with my statement above. They did the drawing today and the results will be posted to the KFW website on Monday after 5pm. They did a live stream of the draw. A friend watched the video for the archery tags and no one from Indiana drew an archery tag. I'm not going to watch a video of names being drawn so I'll wait until Monday evening to find out if I was lucky enough to draw a rifle tag.

I was checking the KFW website to see when the draw date is and it is next Monday the 20th. Upon reading the regs page again I noticed that Kentucky is only going to draw 594 tags this year (through all seasons including youth). Just seems low for some reason or maybe I'm wrong and I've never noticed the "low" tag numbers before. Here's the link to some regs for Kentucky elk. fw.ky.gov/Hunt/Pages/Elk-Hunting-Regs.aspx

So far it has been 3 months since the ATF cashed my check for the suppressor stamp. After checking the wait times I'm still looking at an August/September time frame for receiving the stamp. I was also wrong in one of my posts above as it's a Form 4; not a Form 1. No one had called me out on that yet. IIRC, a form 1 is making your own NFA item and a form 4 is transferring from a dealer to an individual or trust.

I have the same paddle. It was ok until I raised the back of the seat up. The seat is reclined to accommodate the pedaling feature but sucks when you're trying to fish. So I stuck some pvc under the seat to help me sit more upright but by doing this the paddle is too short now.

Already getting anxious for this suppressor. Yesterday I removed the flash hiders from a couple AR's so I can run them suppressed. I got on Ebay and bought some 5/8x24 thread protectors for them. They almost look neutered without the flash hiders. I finally sold my Savage Hog Hunter in 308. Even though it was already threaded and one of the main reasons for buying in anticipation of getting a suppressor. On the other hand I also picked this up. Bought a Bergara HMR in 6.5 Creedmoor. It has a threaded barrel. Also takes AICS detachable mags. I am strongly thinking about parting with the Remington 700 308 after buying this. That one isn't threaded. I will probably use the Bergara more than the 700. The Bergara is a lot lighter and that 700 isn't really the ideal elk rifle (it does have some poundage). It's a great gun but after a while it gets heavy. Just packing it around for local deer hunting was enough to make me realize I don't want to pack that thing out west trying to get an elk. The only down fall is the bullet diameter for a 6.5 is .264". For Kentucky elk you have to use a .270 or larger bullet. So the Creedmoor is out if I draw that Kentucky elk tag. The states out west allow (I believe) a .243 and up (some restrictions on bullet performance do apply). Here's the Bergara. I haven't shot it yet but a dry fire reveals a stupid light trigger. Overall light weight for the gun, 2 front stud mounts for sling and bipod and it has QD mounts on both sides if you want to run that type of sling. Adjustable cheek riser too.

Forgot they were running a similar deal last year when I got mine. They had it marked down to $1500 from $1800 and there was a store wide offer that anything bought with a gift card you would get 10% back on. So I purchased 2 cards to cover the yak (limit a $1k a card) and then used them to buy the yak. At the end of May the promo ended and I had $150 back on the cards. So what should have been an $1800 yak cost me $1350. I ended up using those cards to aid in purchasing a small gun safe back in November. Now that I think about it I mentioned all that in my thread when I bought mine...which happened to be a year ago today because I seen the "memory" on FB this morning.

Ahhh...I see what you mean now Troy. I've thought about getting a smaller yak for the local, smaller lakes. My Pescador is not light and pond hopping can turn into a workout. If I plan on fishing one lake an outing then it's fine. Which for the most part that's what I do anyway.

I still think my ultimate is to get to Alaska to hunt caribou. I've priced some outfitters for this and it is ridiculously (or stupid) expensive. Even though it would probably be worth plunking down that kind of money for the outfitter if you really want to tag a caribou. A guy I went to school with (who now lives in Colorado) went to Alaska for caribou a few years ago. I don't think he used an outfitter either. He was successful on his hunt too. I need to contact him and get his input. This hunt will probably not happen for quite some time. It is at the top of my bucket list. I think just seeing Alaska itself is at the top.

No. Going to have to look into that one now. I also have a line on possibly going to North Carolina for a bear. We shall see.

I still haven't given up on pig hunting in Texas. I discovered another place between Houston and San Antonio that looks good. What I like most is they have a hog/ram combo. The bitch part is it's an 18 hour drive. Having said that I also picked up a brochure last weekend at the Travel show for an outfit in Oklahoma. They also have a hog/ram combo hunt and it's $300 less than the Texas outfit aaaaaannnnnnndddddddddddd it's only a 10 hour drive. Between pigs, elk and now bears (been researching black bear hunts) I really need to get one of these out of the way. Back in for 2019! Only this year Kentucky changed it up a bit and now the archery tag covers bulls and cows. So $30 to KFW and still a slim chance of getting drawn. If I remember right they had a sheet at their counter that said non resident rifle bull odds of drawing were 1 in 800(ish). Sounds right. The drawing is in May. I believe you have until April 30 to buy your entries.

There really aren't any (or hardly any) hoops to jump through with this. Especially if he finds a shop that has the Silencer Shop kiosk. People that use it first have to download the Silencer Shop app to their phone and they will have to request a code to use the kiosk. After that it's all basic question answering (very similar questions like when buying a firearm) and the fingerprinting can be done on the kiosk as well. No need to go to the local PD and get fingerprinted on cards and have to mail them in. All done electronically. There is just that extra charge for the convenience factor. I received an email from Silencer Shop after the ATF cashed the check stating that it's just best to forget about it because you will wait 6-12 months before the ATF will approve the stamp. I think the current wait from time of purchase right now is 8 months. So I hope to have mine by August.

The ATF cashed the check for my form 1 suppressor last week so now I wait another 6 or 7 months before I get to bring it home. Back in December Sig Sauer and Top Guns in TH were running a deal where they would pay the $200 tax stamp. Basically, they knocked $200 off the cost of the can and I'm responsible for still sending the stamp money to the feds (or in my case Silencer Shop sent them a check as I used their kiosk at Top Guns to submit the paperwork). Cost an extra $45 ($40 to Top Guns and $5 to Silencer Shop) to use the kiosk. It makes the suppressor buying process easier and in my eyes was worth the $45. So anyway my soon to be suppressor is the SRD762 which is rated up to a 300 winmag. It is not the fancy titanium, QD version and I did pay less than what the website says (even before the $200 price drop). I may actually start coyote hunting and I'll probably use it for deer season too. Why not? The video on the website is for the QD version but mine is the direct thread (there is a pic of it). I don't think I'll ever need to quickly attach or detach a suppressor from a rifle. www.sigsauer.com/store/srd762.html
