Shooting 220 grain Noslers this thing is hearing safe behind the gun. All you hear is the bullet impacting the target. I should've recorded a video behind the gun too. Ignore Mom's patio furniture. I have sighted many a gun in using this setup though.

I'm on vacation now and frankly if it doesn't cool off by the end of the week I doubt I'll bow hunt. I would like to but I may just wait until gun opener. Going to sight in the rifles tomorrow.

Here's the Ruger before the optic with the can on it. These are fairly light weight rifles with a trigger that mimics the Savage Accu trigger.

Part 2...you ever been in the middle of long post and lose net connection and your post doesn't go through? It's happened to me more than once but not this time. I've learned. Anyway, recently with the ammo shortages I started noticing my local WM would get 350 Legend ammo in stock. Always walking by the counter to see what they have it was always that and I didn't own one. A month or 2 passes and one website that I've used for ordering AR parts has a sale on 350 uppers. A little research and a "swipe" of the card later and I have parts and ammo (deer legal stuff, WM was selling FMJs) on the way. I also had a lot of optic swapping I wanted to do and my new Ruger still didn't have one. Took care of all that last weekend so everything is good to go??? I think? So back to the original purpose of these 2 posts are I can't decide if I want to take the Ruger or the 350 out this year? I still haven't shot either one. I don't know if my suppressor is capable for .35 cal rounds. There might be an increased chance for baffle strikes with it...not sure. So it's either a suppressed Ruger 300BO bolt gun or a loud AR in 350 Legend? Tough call. On a side note I also have 6 days left until 23 days off. Sweet mother of God next Friday cannot get here quick enough. I'll also be taking the bow out the week before opener too.

In a bit of a dilemma for the upcoming deer firearm season. In the beginning of the year I parted ways with my 16" 300 black out AR. It's one of those uppers I shouldn't have bought but I got caught up in tinkering with AR's and the different caliber options a few years ago. I had mentioned selling it and a friend wouldn't stop bugging me about it after that. I was looking to replace the AR with a Ruger Ranch rifle in 300BO but wasn't going to buy one until I sold the AR. The second stimy came through and my friend was right there ready to buy. Sold. Now came the daunting task of trying to find a Ruger Ranch in 300BO (preferably local, did not want to hassle with online) and not overpay for it. It was now April time frame and one became available at TG. There are 2 variants for this rifle. One with a box mag and the other takes pmags. The pmag version is over $100 more than the box mag model. I was wanting the pmag version for ease of swapping mags with different ammo types (don't want to waste the good deer ammo on a yote...that was my thinking at the time). The one TG had was the box mag and it was normal price. Went there after work, looked at it...bought it. After getting it home and checking it over I'm glad I didn't wait for a pmag version as this will do just fine. I also don't see why Ruger upcharges for the pmag variant. I mean, I can but not over $100 more. To date I have not shot this rifle (surprise, surprise). It's a reoccurring theme for me. So the other selling point for this rifle is it has a threaded barrel so I can run the can on it. Load up some big 200+ grain sub sonic rounds and this thing should be really quiet. I do have some Nosler 220 grain subs that the old AR refused to feed. They should do fine in a bolt gun.

I still haven't been in there. With a 3 day weekend and good weather for it on the way I might have to and see what I can find.

Geez...after all these years I still have the same truck. The Tahoe has moved on and was replaced with a Durango but the '04 Ram 2500 is still in my possession (and still going) after 16 years of ownership (next month).

I've never set up a cam on a gut pile before. It took critters less than 2 days to completely remove the gut pile from the buck I killed. We have a designated spot for field dressing all deer killed on the property. Might have to set up a cam on one if we take anymore this year. Waiting for the doe only firearm to start now. I'm back to work and probably won't muzzleload. Christmas shutdown for us is from the 24th through the 3rd. So yeah, doe only firearm. Side note: I only hunted 2 days out of the 23 I was off for vacation. I got my buck 2 days before gun opener which was the first time I even hunted for the season and then I hunted the gun opener and that was it. Didn't step back in the woods after that. I need to check my cams though and start patterning does for the end of the month.

(I took another easy route and copy and pasted this from another site that I posted this on) Took the "easy" road this year. My first time in the woods was last Thursday to get in a couple days of bow hunting before gun season started. Thursday morning there wasn't a lot of activity and had a small 3 point walk past about 20 yards. Called it about 10am and ventured back out shortly before 3pm. Got to one of our tripod stands and quickly remembered how much it sucked to bow hunt out of so I got back down and ventured to the other stand I was at that morning. Mind you this was a lot of walking in slightly warmer weather and I had on too much clothing for it. By the time I got to the stand I was a sweaty mess. Kind of a strong wind coming from the NE which was in my favor. Also felt good. Sometime after 4 I notice a buck walking on a cut through path that connects a couple fields. Grunted and he stops, looks and then continues on his path. Break out the fake horns and rattle. A couple minutes pass and he appears coming down a path we made in the woods. Start to grunt and he shows interest. Started to get a better look at him and pondered just giving him a pass. I did grunt a couple more times and he was very cautious but continued my direction. He gets to about 50 yards out and I start asking myself if I'm going to take the shot. Grunted one more time and he starts on a path that would put him 25-30 yards out. He walked behind a couple trees that abled me to draw the bow back and not get busted. He continued closer and eventually stopped at 25ish yards. He was quartering towards me and I placed my 20 pin a touch high in front of his left shoulder and sent it. Made a good "thwack" sound, a big kick from him and he took off. He eventually runs over a hill and I continue to listen and can hear what appeared to be him crashing. Called my brother in law who was off work heading home and he tells me to back out and come pick him up. His eta was 15 minutes to get home. After the shot maybe 45 minutes passed before going back to start tracking. I felt confident about the shot but you never know. I knew what direction he took off running and did not find any blood until 30 yards in. We found half my arrow that had broke off about 20 yards in; maybe less. The blood trail became easy to track and we found him just over that hill about 100-110 yards from where the shot happened. The shot was good as the arrow destroyed one lung and possibly clipped the other (I really didn't investigate it too much) and the broadhead lodged in the rib cage on the opposite side. This is only my 2nd bow kill to date. My first bow kill was in 2008 and was maybe a week or two before I joined this site. The only good chance I've had at a bow kill during that time was either the 2014 or 2015 season. That's it. Maybe if I put a little more time into it I might become more of a successful bow hunter but I've always loved gun hunting. So my vacation days revolve around the 2 week time frame that is gun season. I have 3 weeks off this month and the first week was for bow. The weather did not cooperate for me as I'm not a fan of hunting in 60+ degree weather and I believe it was above 70 a couple of those days. I think last Thursday was pushing 60. I did hunt the opener yesterday and got out before the rain started. Hunted the evening as well and didn't see one doe. Taking a few off from hunting to get some other stuff done and probably get back at this weekend for some doe hunts.

I have yet to go to the TH location. A coworker told me about some lures he picked up there. Definitely have to swing in there now to check out those potential musky lures.
