Everyone should have a bucket list of what they would like to do before they depart from this world into the after life. Last year I crossed one of those items off the list when I traveled to the Great White North to do some walleye/pike fishing. I have every intention on going back because you are truly with nature when you are dropped off in the middle of nowhere with no communications to the outside world. OK, we had a sat phone but we weren't going to use it unless we needed it. Anywho, another one of those items for me is to make my way to Texas (never been) and take part in killing hogs for some awesome bacon. Yesterday I added a Savage Hog Hunter in .308 that will be my gun of choice when/if I make it down there. I figure this could be used for some yote hunting up here as well. I was leary on buying a 308 as it is a popular round and the ammo crunch is still in effect. I picked this gun up at Terre Haute Guns (which is located in Riley). The only 308 ammo I seen were 2 boxes of Remington Hog Hammer and they were only being offered for sale if you purchased one of the Hog Hunters they had in stock. I originally went there to look at a Remington 700 in 308 to use for "long range". While I think the 700 is a good rifle I'm still not sure on whether or not that's the gun for me. They told me about the Savage they had so I took a look at it. Right out the gate I'm looking at $150 less for the Savage and I was also looking at a threaded barrel as well. Which brings up another item on the list which is to own a suppressor. This particular shop will be going Class 3 in July as well. With the above factors in place I decided the Savage was the right choice for me. I got my fix on buying a new firearm and this will give me more time to decide on a "long range" rifle. Alright, I've rambled on long enough. It may not be much to look at but I am rather excited and happy about this purchase. I have not shot it yet as I'm not going to plink $2 a round ammo. I did happen to find some 147gr FMJ's online today and got a 100 heading my way. Hopefully by the end of the week I can report back with how it shoots.

Looks like a nice new addition to me. I really enjoyed your Canadian bucket list trip and can't wait for the Texas version!

The 700 is really pretty. I love that grain on that wood.

I can tell you the 450 upper itself was $775 (upper receiver, bolt, charging handle, barrel and free floating hand guard). The rest of the gun is pretty much your own grown up set of legos to build and play with. Any lower receiver for an AR will accommodate this round and upper (dedicated .22 lowers maybe not). The best example is the AR Monty bought. He could remove the 5.56 upper from his gun and place a 450 upper on and he's deer legal and ready to go. No other parts swapping required. If you must know the gun you see in the pics above ended up with a price tag of just over $1800. Why so much? I first got the notion to build a deer legal AR back in '09. I kept putting it off and looking at parts deciding what I wanted. I started the build last August. I didn't have the funds together to purchase an upper in time for the '12 deer season so I decided my tax check would get me one in the spring. It ended up being in the fall due to the difficulty of still trying to find certain parts. If I hadn't of found that upper at the 1500 then the lower would've went bye-bye. If I would've left stock alone then you're looking at $1100; give or take a $100 (not including bipod, scope or mount). If you're going to build your own lower then expect a good stripped lower to run in the $90-$125 range. Lower receiver parts kits should run in the $75 range. I saw the good prices at the last 1500 as well. For the stocks and their kits the sky is the limit. Everyone and their brother makes a stock for an AR. There's several out there; have fun deciding which one looks the best to you. You have to decide on fixed or adjustable and then make sure the buffer tube is the correct size for the stock you want. Commercial or mil-spec are the choices on buffer tube size. If I'm not mistaken the mil-spec is smaller diameter.

Bought #4 at the last 1500 and am now debating on what to do with it. I have 3 options going through my head. 2 of them are down right expensive; no way around trying to cut cost elsewhere. First option and one of the more expensive ones is building a suppressed, short barreled 9mm. The tax stamps will add extra cost to complete this one. Here is what I imagine only with a suppressor on the end of it. I could go ahead and build this and wait for the funding to get the suppressor. Option 2 is at a completely different level. Quite possibly though the cheapest way (yet still pricey) to buy a 50 BMG rifle. My last option and quite possibly the one I'll go with is a 300 Blackout build. Nothing special. It will look similar to my other builds. If the HPR law passes for deer season next year then this round should fall into that category. It is already a deer legal round to use if you are using an AR pistol.

I've been holding off on posting this and I actually could have posted it last month but I waited until I got a video made. In my previous post I was debating on what I was going to do with the lower I had purchased. I was originally going to build a 300 blackout but changed my mind after I already had the lower ready to go. So after some disassemble and adding different parts I ended up with a single shot, bolt action 338 lapua. I topped it with a Vortex Viper 6x24-50 with Vortex PMR rings. The stock that is currently on it will be swapped out soon as I finally found a Magpul PRS and got it ordered today.
Now...for the video...it's ok. The first 4 minutes are of me giving a run down of the rifle. I took it out Sunday in the rain and put 5 shots through it. It's nothing spectacular to watch but it gives you an idea of what the gun is. I will say that the recoil from it is very manageable and came as a surprise to me when I first pulled the trigger. I'll get another video of this sometime in the near future but not until we have some decent weather.
