The story of Sam's buck starts with a group text from Monty on October 28th saying he finally got horns on trail camera with a picture of a buck. He didn't plan on hunting this year and I don't think Sam was planning on it either. Sam is on the drum line for Purdue's marching band so he is usually busy every weekend. I noticed Purdue didn't have a game opening weekend of gun season so I told Sam he should come home and get that buck and I could film so that's what we did. We sat all day in the stand Saturday except for a quick one hour lunch break. We saw a lot of deer and passed on multiple smaller bucks. Sam had one deer in mind. Monty watched the deer from the house on multiple occasions leading up to season. We were hoping he would stick around long enough for Sam to get a chance. This morning we were back in the stand well before shooting light. We saw a decent 8 right at sunrise that Sam passed on. Nothing else showed up until 10. I was standing stretching my legs when I look to my left and see him. I turn and say "Sam he is to my left". The buck goes through the thickest part of the woods unfortunately not giving Sam a shot. He goes out of sight in front of us and we thought that would be it. A few minutes later though Sam says "I think I see him again". The deer shows back up in front of us but towards the right this time. He comes in to range and Sam put a perfect shot on him. The buck goes just a few yards and piles up. We were both shaking worse than I think we ever have over a deer. It was crazy seeing him in the flesh after Monty sending the pictures and us putting a lot of hours in the stand this weekend for this ONE deer. It's awesome when a plan comes together! I filmed the hunt and will start working on the video. Congrats again Sam!
