Four of us (myself, my son, my son's friend, and son's friends Dad) went to GSSF yesterday.
We started out at Turtle Lake (Dugger Unit, in the shadows of Bass Lake) and had a pretty steady bite but mostly very small bluegill.
Couldn't find the bigger ones so we pulled out and made the trek over to the Star pit in the old forest area.
i do have to say Turtle is a nice pit but not sure how good the fishing quality is there. (This was my 2nd trip there. First time I caught a "buttload" of small bass.) I like the peacefulness there and the fact no one else was out there. (Probably a good reason for that)
We traded the windswept open (no shade) but clear and clean water of Turtle for the much older (forested, shade, and LOTs of woody structure) of Star Pit. Looked promising but the cottonwood fibers made it hard to keep line clean and acted as impromptu "bobber stops" for our slip bobbers. Kind of a pain in the rear but we persevered. (We're pretty stubborn).
I caught one fairly nice gill, a small bass, and a bunch of "dinks" (gills). The other Dad caught a REALLY gill ('this one has some shoulders') and a few other "nice" ones plus a turtle. The turtle thankfully decided to do a LDSR (long distance self release). We thought Pat had a big un there for 45 seconds or so.)
Boys didn't do quite as well with their fishing but still enjoyed the time out there- lots of little ones but nothing to brag about. They spent more time talking about their girlfriends and other stuff that 15 year olds talk about.
Even though the "catching" wasn't outstanding for us yesterday the "fishing" was great! I plan to get back soon but will try some different pits next time. Anybody on here that float tubes I am always looking for a fishing buddy so I don't have to go alone. (Safer that way I think). Heck, even if you're going in a boat, kayak, canoe, or whatever give me a shout and if I can go I will.
Thanks - Jay
