what kind of snare wire or cable are you using. if i was using snares even for coons my preference is 7x7 3/32" galvinized aircraft cable. mr coon will be there even if he is chewing on the cable but after the first catch yur probably gonna want to use another snare cause they get pretty narly after an animal chews on them. if you can post some pics so we can have a better idea of what yur dealing with that would be cool.

Just shoot it !! My dad had a bad problem with coons. He asked DNR what to do about it, and they said to just shoot them. He had tried trapping them in cages, but it seemed like for every one he caught, two more took it's place. The ones he did catch, he drove them about 20 miles away and dumped them out alive. All that did was create a problem for other people !

you could shot them but you risk being in trouble with yur local conservation office i know where i live if you shoot any wild animal that is damageing yur property you have to call a conservation officer and surrender the the animal to them plus if you live inside of city limits you can get fined for discharging a firearm with in city limits which where i live is a class D feloney so i would check my state laws before doing that.

thats a good argument box traps are good but they are bulky and expencive and hard to set sometimes snares are relatively cheap and can be modified to act like a dog leash by adding a crimp on deer stop to the snare loop so the snare does not tighten down any more than what a collar would be on a dog or cat

Big difference in trapping in season, or out of season to harvest a pest animal. Out of season contact your county CO. In season An answer to hunterguy 28 question. The easiest way to catch a coon is to take a 1&1/2 coil or long spring leg hold trap, a 5gal. bucket, and bait. If cats or dogs run lose were you trap you can use a sweet bait like jelly, penut butter, marshmellows. In an area awys from houses. Fish, freash caught & frozen if you like or just a can of sardines. At A fence roll end wire the 5gal bucket to the fense. Place a trap in front to guard the bait. Cover lightly as coons are not so trap wise as fox . wire the trap to the fence were there is a little give so when it pulls it has a give. Can wire to a limb large enough so he can drag it ,but not run aways with. He will tangle up very close and should be easy to find. A dirt hole set like you would make for fox near any water will work as well. Use again fish as bait ,but this time be clean, Clean trap and set the trap in a bed infront of the hole and siff cover with dirt, as a fox will as well check these out, as well as mink. Easy to make and catch ,hard to beat a cubby set( like the 5 gal. bucket I talked about). You can make a little stick house and put the bait back behind the front opening and set trap to guard opening. Out of season, buy a larger live trap, and release in an area you trap durning the season.
Another hint: I always carried a home made hand snare. A peice of plastic PVC with a coated wire run down the pipe and tied off at the end with a small hole drilled for that purpose. None target animals like cats, dogs or what ever I always released by putting the snare over the animals front legsaround its sholder and release the animal. Never broke a leg on a cat or dog that found my trap. Caught a German sherpard once and he was so glad I let him out he wouldnt leave me. I had to throw rocks at him , was afraid he would get into more of my sets. I use to sell coons alive to a buyer fox as well for a bonus .He would collect the urine and sell that, so thats when I made a snare.
