Project #2 was building a homemade bat house. Having a creek running right behind our house is cool, but after sunset, the mosquito situation is not good. Thought I'd try combating them with their natural born enemy! Looked around a little for a store bought house, but they all looked really cheaply made, and weren't very big at all. Decided to build one from scratch using ideas from several different sources on the net. I think I ended up with around $40 in materials for a house that, in theory, could house up to 300 bats. Here's a few pix. Staining the interior dividers made up of 1/2" plywood to help protect the wood. I roughed up these sections with a Dremel to give the bats some traction. Cut out a little bat design for some ventilation (And I thought it would look cool! ). View from below showing the 5 seperate chambers. View from the top before putting the roof on. The 2 flat boards on top create an "attic" for new borns who can't hang on yet. The finished product mounted on a 14' treated 4"X4". The 2X4's will be removed once the concrete sets up. Just waitin' and hopin' the bats find it now. We'll see.

That's pretty cool. Just hope it doesn't get infested with wasps or hornets before the bats find it.

I hope the effort pays off. Looks cool too. That thing could almost use a Harley-Davidson sticker on it too
