Are there any duck hunters on here? I had never been on a duck hunt in my life until last Saturday morning. I had the opportunity to help film the Central Indiana Chapter Delta Waterfowl Youth hunt for the Chasing the Squad TV show. The hunt was held at nearby Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area. This was just about the coolest hunt I've ever been part of! I never realized that there was that much waterfowl here in Indiana, and especially 20 minutes down the road. I was with an 11 year old named Sam, his Dad, and guide Tim Powell of the HIT Squad. Luckily, Troy Keen of CICDW had an extra pair of waders for me to use, because we hunted in the main pool of the marsh in waist deep water. At the first hint of light, the ducks started splashing down among the decoys. When shooting time finally arrived, I felt like I was filming another dove hunt, there were birds everywhere! We were standing in some cattails and the teal would fly around the edge, right in your face. You would swear you had just been buzzed by a tiny F16! Sam was using his Dad's shotgun and had a lot of near misses early on. He got the hang of it though and was able to take a shoveler, blue winged teal, and a BANDED goose. The hunt was a huge success for all the youngsters and it sounds like CICDW plans on making this an annual event. Maybe we can get Booey and catfishsam out there next year? Sam with his birds and proud Papa. Tim Powell (right) put out the extra effort to chase down and retrieve the goose. Happy hunters...

Sounds like it was a pretty fun day. Taking that banded goose must have been exciting for that kid, but I'm sure the other kills were just as exciting. is there anywhere to see the footage you took Troy?

got a 3 acre family owned pond around several other bodies of water that ducks seem to frequent that I've hunted the last couple of years. Your right it is fun! Seems to get pretty hot on our pond in late november through December. We need to set up a hunt for Chase and Booey sometime. I killed my limit of mallards two times last year, could have shot 50 on those days. There are a lot of geese as well. Haven't seen many lately. Was hoping to hunt the early season but not much activity right now. I have a buddy who has about 200 acres in the Lewis area where a canal sort of thing runs into the eel. Have seen a lot of Wood Ducks there duting spring turkey hunts. Thought about hitting that in the early season but am worried that the woodies may have hit the road during that early cold snap. Seems like they fly the coop at the first hint of cold weather.

is there anywhere to see the footage you took Troy? I just sent the tape into the HIT Squad today. Hopefully there's some footage good enough for the show. I'll post it when it comes out.

We need to set up a hunt for Chase and Booey sometime. Sounds good! Booey doesn't sound that interested in the ducks, but I bet catfishsam would be. He could try out that new mossberg.

We'll try to do it with Chase and Sam. I use a mossberg myself. Saw about 40 geese in the beanfield nest to our pond tonight, and one BIG white bird(?). I'm a little leary of shooting those honkers though. Last time I shot one of those it nearly landed in my lap.

Thanks for your help Troy Everyone involved has either called, sent a card or emailed me about the success of the event. I can't wait to see the videos. I hope you see waterfowl hunting a little different after your experience at GP. See there is more than corn and deer in Indiana. I look forward to working with you on the HIT Squad this year. I hope we have the opportunity to knock down some birds over the winter. Lets use both of our resources and get a hunt together to video. Happy Hunting!!

I'm a little leary of shooting those honkers though. Last time I shot one of those it nearly landed in my lap. I think we need to get this done, Jon! I'll be the cameraman, then if Chase can get a few down he can take the camera work over and I'll take a whack at 'em. It would be sweet if Catfishsam can get his buck out of the way this week, then none of us would have an excuse not to be 'fowlin. I went to the post office and got Chase and mines duck stamps this morning. They were almost sold out, only 5 left. Monty - Sam doesn't need a federal duck stamp, but he does need a HIP number. It's free and here's where you get one: www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/3567.htmLet's do this!

If you can find a hot field or marsh to hunt duck hunting is the berries! I love it! I'm not too much into goose hunting as its just not as exciting as a good duck hunt. We've struggled finding good fields the last couple of years up north. Goose Pond is probably stealing all our birds

We can do it Troy. We just need to get our schedules meshed. Do you guys have lay-out blinds? That's what I normally hunt out of. There is not a whole lot of cover around my pit, depending on the wind.
