Posted by the manager of Shakamak State Park on Facebook today. I agree; most of the water I pass on my commute is still open. Even with the cold temps we are still experiencing ice melt throughout the day. Stay safe!

Just gonna say...ice fishing is boring. It is slightly better than trolling a lake.

I drove around shakamak last night and there was still open water. Walked down to the lake and it was still slushy with it being so cold.

I'm gonna poke around on my buddy's pond this week and see what it looks like. I'm guessing this snow ruined our chances to get on anything solid.

I’m gonna check our ponds. Trying not to get my hopes up though.

Icefishing is fun from the social aspect.
I'm sure trolling can be alright, but my experience has been very slow. I've been out four or five times and caught three wipers.

Here's my ice report: I checked my buddy's pond in southwest Monroe County. It is an old spring-fed pond that he re-dug a few years ago and stocked. The dig ended up failing because it filled back up with sediment and it is only about 7 foot at its deepest. The plan is to try again this summer so he wants all the fish out which are just now good keeper size. Anyhow, it is full of junk ice. Probably 2-2.5" of it. Then I went to my neighbor's pond in the Bloomfield area. It is sheltered from the wind, but it also sits in a gully and drains a lot of water from two or three other ponds on top of the hill. That being said, in the two winters I've fished it, it has seemed to build ice fast and keep it. It was junk ice too!
I have no doubt there are some places with the right circumstances that are safe to fish. However, I would be very leery of trusting some of these reports and just go traipsing onto any frozen pond you see. Depending on how this next snow storm turns out, it will probably be worth checking again this Friday.

Things aren’t looking too promising. I’m surprised we don’t have better ice with these temps lately.

Still haven’t checked our ponds, been to busy preparing all these critters for the snow and cold. Saw this on Facebook yesterday.

I walked on water yesterday on my buddy's pond in Monroe County. 4.5-5.5" mixture of clear and clouded ice. There were also some pure junk spots. I did a lot of spudding. Caught 4 fish. until next year.....
