The Rematch - Last week I went 5 rounds(days) with these crazy birds, now it's time to start all over. Monty and me will be going after them in the morning. Monty with his bow, and me with camera and shotgun. This season has been a lot harder than I would have ever imagined, and now the pressures on. I'm still confident that we can get it done, so bring on the morning!

Monty and me were back on Hillenbrand FWA this morning. Parked the truck and walked about 3/4 mile to a field where I had been seeing birds and set the ground blind up. At first light a hen came out to feed, the only gobbles were way off. The closest gobble sounded like it was coming from my truck, or real close to it. Around 9:00 we got out of the blind to try some run-n-gun. We made a big circle and were getting close to the truck when we hear a gobble. We got within about 150 yds and setup, the bird was still gobbling, but he wasn't coming in, so we grab the decoy and get closer. As we're moving in on him he starts gobbling his head off and it sounds like he's coming to us. We hurry up and stake the hen decoy and get under a pine tree. He gobbles a few more times and I would swear he was coming in, but, same old story, he clamed up and we didn't hear him again. After a while we backed out and headed for the truck. As we're walking up to the truck I say "That turkey had to have seen the truck". We look up and there he is, walking out in to the road, not 50 yds from the stinking truck. He looks at us, then takes off running down the road and flies off.

Chase and me setup at one of our food plots by the "Bellbucksnbeards Pond" this evening. The skeeters and gnats just about ate us up, so we went home for more bug spray and to regroup. We decided to try a tiny little woods across from the house where we know hens cross the road every evening. The woods is probably only 1 or 2 acres, and we just couldn't find a good place to setup. We decide to head across the field to setup, I'm in the process of telling Chase that we really need to watch for turkeys, because the field is grown up in mustard weed and it's really hard to see the birds. I don't even finish my sentence before we see 2 red heads running away from us across the field. Two toms and a hen were already in the field. If we had setup where we originally planned, we would have been in front of them and only about 75 yds away. This hunt pretty much sums up our season; one bad decision after another. Oh well. Tomorrow's another day, and I'd rather be in the woods than at work anyday!!

They just stay out of range, it's like they can sense how close they can safely be. I'm trying to talk Chase into buying a Benelli, so we can reach out and touch someone!

Yeah I shoot a Mossberg 12 guage wit a full choke and i shoot 3 1/2 inch 5 shot shells Last year i used all that and dropped my bird at 45 yards. He hung up at 45 yards (like they always do) and I was confident I could get him and sure enough it all worked out.
