The summer run is going on right now at Daytona in the Halifax River and I'm dying to get back down there!! During this summer run of the white shrimp you basically find them on your fish finder and then throw a castnet over them. The limit is 5 gallon per boat per day. Right now we don't have any immediate plans to go down there so I'll probably miss out on this run. I need to get me a castnet and start practicing anyhow.

So we have high speed internet now and a big ol' smart TV and I was watching youtube videos on it the other day and I watched this new shrimping video while Gail was in the room. She's now gung ho for the shrimping! She's been shopping for shrimping cast nets. I told her to hold off until we get down there because they run $150-$350 and I see them on craigslist sometimes. In fact there's one on there now for $60 but I'm sure it will be gone by the time we get back down there around Halloween. I did order a smaller cast net to start practicing with and to use for bait catching. Hopefully it's not to heavy so I can pack it in the luggage when we fly down next month. Here's the video I was watching that's gonna cost me some $$$

Well, I've marked sheepshead off my bucket list so next is to catch a mess of shrimp. The shrimp are running in Daytona right now and Gail and me will be down there on the 27th. Unfortunately it's just for a couple days. We're delivering some pups to their new homes. Still would like to give it a shot either over in the salt at the Halifax River or on the St Johns up north of Lake George. We shall see!

Still haven't decided if it will be the St Johns or Halifax. Daytona is producing some big shrimp but slow catches and the St Johns is producing some big catches but small to medium shrimp and they're sill farther north than I'd like to travel in the boat. I'll just have to keep checking the reports as it gets closer.

My tentative plans right now are to try the Salt Springs Run area of Lake George first and if no luck there I'll head north and try the Welaka and Dunn's Creek areas. Palatka isn't out of the question though if I need to go that far.

Just curious...do you use traps to catch them? No, for the summer run it's mainly cast nets. You use your graph to find them then cast over them. Some people do it from docks and bridges too. That's mainly done at night and you get them to come to you with some kind of bait, like cat food. You can use traps but they are usually used for the winter run when people anchor at night and use underwater lights to dip net the shrimp. The traps have to be manned so folks will drop a trap or two along the boat while they're dip netting.

This is from a shrimping group I’m in on fb. Saving this here so I can find it later. This pertains to the St Johns.
You Asked - I will Share... Bait Cakes = YOU ARE WELCOME! From 1975 when I first started shrimping in Dr's Inlet and Green Cove. 5 pounds fish meal - get from local shops like a feed shop (the old one I used to get it from closed years ago, but they are still around) 2 pounds flour - regular or enriched - does not matter 2 pounds rock salt - like course ice-cream salt (in a pinch you can use water softener salt) 1 gallon water Mix well, add water and mix more and let sit for about 2 - 3 hours so the fish meal can ripen up (smelly) Take a 1 cup scoop and make 1 cup balls - then flatten out to the size of a burger (flatten them out). Let them sit for a while on a sheet pan or something. I would then take small pieces of wax paper and place between them so they don't stick together. They will be sticky - you can place in a cooler if you want. By flattening them out - when you toss them in the water on a flowing tide, they lay flat and don't roll away = don't make "bait balls" - they roll with the tide. Throw your net about 10' behind the bait where the water has already crossed = downstream = once you get close to ending the night, you can start throwing closer or on the bait. Lights do help by the way - they are attracted to them. We never had the green ones like today = when I was younger =- so it was lanterns on the pier or flood lights off the dock near the water. I always had better luck on incoming tide. (more moon the better) PRO TIP 1: Go to Walmart and get you a $7 kiddie pool and a dust pan - you will thank me later. PRO TIP 2: Deep water (more than 15') use nets with webbing - especially if you are in the hole at Dr's Inlet bridge - that hole used to be 35' deep, so we would throw 16' nets and have a 32' radius at the landing with the webbing (for those that still question webbing, its like the "doors" on a shrimp trawler - it spreads the net - even if you throw crappy. PRO TIP 3: Water less than 6' - NO webbing! That net needs to sink as fast as it can or they scatter. PRO TIP 4: Teach a kid to shrimp and he'll never go hungry cause now he knows to catch food (shrimp, fish, etc) - and it's GREAT family time. YOU ARE ALL WELCOME. Maybe one day soon, I can get "home" and hook up with one of you guys. Mom passed last year and we sold her place in Fleming Island. SO the only reason I have to come back - is to go shrimping.... Just a last note from me: Everyone has different ways and techniques - this is what I was taught in 1975 and did this for years until I move out in 1987. Even now, when I go, this is how I roll....

I'm saving this for future reference! The guy linked the airbnb where he catches the shrimp and it's not far from where Gail and I tried it that one time on the St Johns, just north of Lake George. AirBnBThe same spot last year;

Some nice shrimp are being caught in Daytona and I've even seen some reports of shrimp being caught in the St Johns already, although small. I ordered this castnet over the weekend and fingers are crossed that it gets here before Friday! Bett's Old Salt Deep Hole - 7'
