Finally got my kayak salty for the first time but I would have been better off staying in bed! My morning started by hitting a dang buzzard with my rental truck which took out part of the grill. Picked up some shrimp in Ormond at Granada Bait and Tackle and then got to Tomoka State Park right as they were opening the gate. Paddled out to a spot I found on Google maps that looked promising and hooked up with a jack that gave me a good fight right off the bat. It was a constant battle with the wind so I finally just drifted into the back waters. I landed a ladyfish and a little later I caught a decent little Spanish mackerel that I decided to bring home for lunch. As I reached behind me to put it in the cooler I FLIPPED! It happened so fast I was shocked for a second, but I quickly flipped it back and started grabbing what gear was floating. I then realized that my feet were hitting mud so I threw my life jacket in the yak and started feeling around with my feet for stuff. I found everything except a Scotty rodholder, aluminum pliers, and the heartbreaker; my gopro. No footage of my first salty kayak misadventure. My phone was zipped up in my life jacket and barely got wet but it was wet enough to kill it. After taking a break on shore to calm down a bit I paddled back to the truck and called it a day. Just got back from walsuck with a new phone and gopro. Lol
I've been on some big lakes with this kayak and had never come close to flipping...other than getting in or out. I think it was partly due to a tall cooler in the back I had never paddled with before. I think when I reached back the bag of ice kind of fell to the side and there I went. Will also be adding a float to the gopro and tethering the rodholder. Live and learn I guess.
