Went out to Shakamak today to check ice conditions and all 3 lakes still had some open water. With spring like weather again this weekend it doesn't look good at all for ice this winter around here.

I had to run down to Linton today so I took a ride through Greene-Sullivan Forest to check the ice. I was pretty disappointed with what I found. Wampler Lake had skim ice and an area the geese and ducks were keeping open... I then checked Lonnie at the boat ramp off 159 and found about an inch of slush and 1/2" of ice. I could put the heel of my boot through it. I looked over at Narrow Lake where the cabins are and it had open water around that south facing point. It was in the mid twenties and sunny here today and things were really melting. Next 3 nights they're calling for 10, -9, and -1, so there's still a chance. Might be back in the 40's this weekend while I'm working, so I probably won't get to enjoy the ice even if we get it.

I think it's time for you to just start thinking about getting the yak out . Like you've said before, it's hard to believe we live in the same state We have at least 12" of ice in most places and some places even 16" and with this current cold spell we are in we may put a few more inches on. It's getting to be like last year. You can't auger too many holes with a hand auger before being exhausted. I'm buying a power auger prior to next season

I think it's time for you to just start thinking about getting the yak out . I was seriously planning on getting the yak out this week before the cold snap hit. Was gonna take it down to Patoka and try to find some of those millions of walleye they've been stocking in there for years. Unfortunately, they got hit worse with snow this week than we did and it's subzero weather there too.

It's the time of year I hate the most. Not enough ice to fish but just enough ice and lousy weather to still not be able to fish Hate it! Just Hate It!

I think I'll run to some of the ponds in the National Forest tomorrow after work to see if there is any chance to get on this weekend. If they aren't good for this weekend I think next weekend they will be. Forecast looks good to make ice, I just hope we don't get anymore snow.

I checked our pond today and it was good news/bad news. First the good; measured 2.5 inches. That doesn't sound like a lot, but our pond never has as much as we measure out at Shakamak. The bad; my auger blades are shot. Drove them right through that thin ice on Lonnie the other day and into the gravel at the ramp. Tried to get them sharp with the dremel but only made them worse. Just ordered a new pair.

Checked one of my ponds this evening and it was nothing but junk ice. I hope I can get on next weekend.

I can't believe there's still open water on some of the pits I pass up here in Vigo County. This isn't looking good.

A lady I work with runs at Shakamak almost everyday. She says there were several people on Shakamak and Kickapoo fishing all day Saturday. Apparently the pond I checked Friday night just isn't a good ice maker. I think I'll run out to the forest or Shakamak one evening this week and give it a go.

Thanks for the update, Patrick. I've got one more night to work and then hopefully it's ICE ON!

Good luck and be safe! I've seen reports from Martinsville down to Bedford and people are saying it is very uneven ice. Hopefully, these frigid nights are making things more consistent.

Was hoping to get out this week, but I ended up getting sick Monday night at work, so all I've pretty much done since then is sleep. I did put my new auger blades on today and drilled a hole at the pond. The pond ice is 3-4" of junk/slush ice. This winter has pretty much sucked other than the week I spent in Florida.

I cut 7" yesterday and it was solid, but the snow had been blown off the middle. The edges had snow and were slushy but still alright. All I could get to bite were small gills, nothing big enough to fillet. I was by Nineveh (atterbury) in Johnson County. Nobody around me had crappie minnows. Was fun to get out. Pic is from a few years back at same pond.
