Went out this morning for my last youth season hunt,. I turn 18 in 6 days. Until this morning, I have not heard a SINGLE gobble yet. But I got in right after daylight and setup in some woods where there is a big bluff and I figured I would see if I could call in some hens with feeding calls, and see if they would have a tom or bearded hen with them. So there I sat, thinking "This is never gonna work" Doing some crappy sounding purrs and clucks on my slate call. a few minutes later i look over to see a big old hen come up over the bluff and look towards me making some soft clucks and yelps. 3 hens came over with her and they scratched around about 30-35 yards away. Then I yelped at her and she got mad and did some more aggressive yelping, which made a turkey gobble right over the bluff from us. That gobble flipped a switch in me and sent adrenaline through my body. I just let her keep on yelping and do my calling for me. Then 5 minutes later i look over and start seeing more hens, about 5 coming from where the gobble was. Then, I see a big ugly white head appear out from behind a briar bush, he flared up into full strut and had the sun glimmering off of him. Then my knees started knocking. lol He finally walked down where the hens had walked, I called to him but he was already focused on the live hens in front of him and wouldn't even look at my decoys.(I was hoping he would see the jake decoy and go to attack it) So he was about 35 yards and I let him have it with my old 12 gauge pump (full choke). The first shot just crippled him, and he was limping and flapping his wings, then i shot him again, and he turned around and ran towards me, where I dropped him with the third shot haha It was very exciting. I couldn't imagine a better turkey hunt.
