I've only gone after squirrels a couple of times. What do you guys do? Do you get to the woods around daylight? The one time I actually killed a squirrel was sitting in the treestand after deer season. I figured I'd see at least one since you see so many while you're deer hunting. Early season it's best in the early morning, they're most active and it's also the most comfortable time of day for the hunter. Right now they're eating hickory nuts. Just walk in a woods that has hickory trees and wait and listen.....you'll hear it raining down nut shells and there's your squirrel. Here's some really good advice on Indiana squirrel hunting from the late Bayou Bill Scifres... www.bayoubill.com/squirrels/squirrelbehavior.html

Another method I used growing up was to walk around the edge of a cornfield with my 410 and pick them off as they scampered from the corn back to the woods.

I'm thinking I might try to slip out to my Owen County spot Saturday morning. I know that there are quite a few shagbarks out there. I can do a squirrel hunting/deer scouting combo trip.

I can do a squirrel hunting/deer scouting combo trip. Now you're cookin' with peanut oil. I never "just" squirrel hunt anymore. I'll be scouting for deer, frogs, fishing holes, or just enjoying nature. Yesterday I spent more time looking down in washed out areas for arrowheads than I did looking up for bushy tails. Did find a few pieces of flint, but nothing special...

I went yesterday evening and only heard one squirrel cutting a nut. By the time I got over to the tree he quit and I couldn't locate him. Ironically, he was in a walnut tree. I usually don't catch them in walnut trees this early?? Nothing was happening in any of the hickory trees. I think the problem was the dang crows. They were in my woods thick and I think it had the squirrels laying low. I'm hoping to give it another go tomorrow morning.

Usually morning and evening are best, but you can pretty much hunt them all day. I try to slip into an area where I know the nests are, and sit until I have on in range or hear them cutting, if they're cutting you an usually slip right in on them unnoticed. Right now they seem to be on the hickories.

I'm on the board! First gray squirrel I've ever killed here at our place. Only been seeing them 3 or 4 years. Got it on video too! Matt - I seen one in a walnut tree yesterday too. All the others were hitting hickories.

One more, this one was a little tougher. Hunted for probably an hour and 15 minutes without seeing or hearing anything, as I stood up to leave I heard a crash and saw leaves moving up in a tree at about 100yds, but it was across a massive briar patch from me. To make a long story short, I ended up waiting and he came all of the way to me! Must've been really old or something, because I attempted to eat it and it was way too tough. felt terrible for wasting it.

It won't work the way you described either. I send phone pics to my email too, but then I have to save them on my computer and then upload them to photobucket. If you don't want to do photobucket, you could just use the "Add Attachment" feature on proboards.

I didn't see any this morning, but I didn't get out as early as I had planned. The bed was just too comfy.
I did see a couple of shagbarks with cuttings that looked about a day old. I figure that's a good spot to set up the next time I go out there.
