Hey guys and girls, Just got into coyot hunting about a year ago and even there were no sightings, I loved it. I got out for the first time this year to a new spot where we deer hunt at our lil honey hole. Its only about 35 acres and saw a few doe withing a half hour. I have basically the same setup as chase with his lil cotton tail movin rabbit but a mouth call. About 30 seconds after finishing a call period, my dad said, Nick theres a coyot across the field. I was just using an old bolt action single shot .22 scoped for 50 yrds for squirrel. He finally made it to about 80 yrds and i put the cross hairs a lil high on him and crack. He bit himself where the hollow tip hit and started spinning in circles. After 3 or 4 spins he took off for the woods wobbling as he ran but the ol .22 couldnt get er done. To bad we always got next time. Hopefully im gonna go to the gun range and get my gun and a semi scoped for 100 yrds and that will prolly get er done. Hopefully
Good luck out there

In my opinion, you should never use a .22 for hunting coyote. It doesn't matter what type of ammo you decide to use. A .22 simply does not have the velocity or knock down power to reliably and humanely kill a coyote. They are very tough animals and although a .22 will probably eventually kill it, it won't ever drop it on the spot. I would highly recommend using a more powerful rifle caliber such as .223 or .243.

I agree with Brian. I've heard of people using .17 hmr and .22 wmr("magnum") for yotes, but it's gonna have to be a close clean shot. A .22 lr will eventually kill 'em, but if you want to recover them you better use something bigger. The smallest caliber I've heard mentioned for effective yote hunting is the .22 hornet, which is a CENTERFIRE cartridge.

ballistic tipped .17's will do the job, but like Troy and Brian said it has to be an absolutely perfect shot. Heck, the only time I have ever shot one I was deer hunting. I took its head nearly clean off with a .243 ballistic tip.

I have to disagree, i have these CCI Velociters, they are .22 lr hollow points that are hypervolocity rounds and CAN take down coyotes cleanly. I'm planning on getting out and goin coyote hunting after school with my Single shot bolt action Stevens .22 and il definitely post the results on here. But i do agree that if you have the option of using something of a larger caliber, you should use it.

a .22 hollow point is going to fragment on impact with a coyote. There will hardly be any penetration at all. Way to much luck is involved to use a .22 on a coyote. They may be a varmint, but as hunters it is our responsibility to be as humane as possible.

You can find a really good NAF or handy rifle single-shot .243 for 200 dollars (give or take). They are great rifles, They have taken numerous deer for me.

Another idea is a Savage Edge. They are around 300 and are an extremely accurate rifle for the price.

I will still hunt with a .22 but only if i have a good close range shot, i wouldn't take a shot if it was going to make the animal suffer.

Glad to hear that you decided not to hunt yotes with a .22. You can pick up .308s for cheap also.

.22/250 is a great round, if ancient, for yodel pups as well.
But heck, .223 is plentiful and inexpensive round these days.

After thinkin about it, i think im gonna switch to my M1 Carbine in .30 carbine, still considered a little light for most people, but it should get the job done.
