Haven't been on here in a while but thought I'd post this up. It was a very warm year and basically all of the regular duck season sucked, never had many new ducks. But, after a real cold snap, this year the youth hunt in Alabama was on fire! I am lucky and didn't turn 16 until the week after the youth hunt, so I got one last shoot in. We killed 40 ducks in 2 days, mostly mallards, including a few pintails and a double banded black duck! One of the best hunts I've been on, and it was public land. Mainly all in flooded timber and off fingers between the timber. This is my friend with the black duck.

Nice shoot! We haven't had many ducks down here this season, they are all held up in your area because it won't get cold!!

Odd, I never see much deer movement on a windy day, seen 14 doe and 1 lil buck. So much happened while I was in the stand, its gona be one of those stories that get repeated every year while getting pumped up for season again. Probably getting ready or are in the rut. Seems like they don't care what's going on during the rut.

I have it TERRIBLE. It's not just bucks for me, I don't know what it is. Maybe it was just super bad last year because down it my parts we didn't see many deer. I saw 5 does late in the season in a shooting house, and I litteraly shook the whole thing for about 45 minutes. The worst I have ever had it was last December when I was hunting from the GROUND in a place with very little cover, that I had only see does at. I had my bow on my lap and was sitting in a lawn chair, really not even trying. Had the biggest buck I had ever seen in my life poke his head out of the brush (he came out of NO WHERE, never heard or saw him before hand) and then he spotted me and ran off. I'm pretty sure I didn't stop shaking the rest of the day.
I would say just shoot a doe or something to get the itch off the first part of the season, maybe it will calm your nerves a little knowing that you already have something in the bag!

Calling is key. If you don't know how to call it will be tough unless you have those huge groups coming in. My advice would be to drive around and scout the fields with binos the day before you hunt and see where they are, set up there the next morning in a layout blind with as many decoys as you can buy. Them goose decoys sure ain't cheap. My favorite way of doing it is jump shooting. I like to do that on a couple ponds after a day of dove shooting.

From what I have been hearing recently, this year the duck numbers are the highest they have been since the 50's. I thought it was going to be hard to beat last year, but now they are saying this? I can't tell you how pumped I am!! Only 2 months until teal season, I can't wait.
