Event Description The coming of spring marks a surge in walleye fishing opportunities in river tailwaters below major dams throughout northern Indiana.
River walleyes begin to migrate upstream by mid-March in search of spawning habitat. Where blocked by dams, they congregate in large numbers.
“Avid walleye anglers have fished these areas for years,” DNR fisheries biologist Neil Ledet said. “We want to encourage other fishermen to give it try.”
Hot tailwater locations include the Tippecanoe River below the Oakdale Dam near Monticello, the St. Joseph River below the Elkhart Dam in Elkhart County, and the Salamonie River below the Salamonie Dam in Wabash County. Anglers also should try two hot spots in Fort Wayne. They are the Maumee River below the Hosey Dam and the St. Joseph River below the dam at Johnny Appleseed Park.
Walleye fishing can be more productive when water levels drop after a period of runoff. The increased flow triggers walleye to move upstream, and the declining flow helps concentrate them.
Walleyes are not built to swim against a strong current for long periods, so anglers can find them on the edge of eddies, behind boulders or anything that provides a break from current. Anglers also should look for areas of slow current near the bank, especially after sunset.
Ledet suggests fishing with white or chartreuse lead-head jigs, or suspended jerk baits with rattles. Walleyes are most active on overcast days and the first couple hours after sunset and before sunrise.
Some walleye anglers wade, which can be treacherous during high flow. Most areas can be fished from the bank. Contact Information: Name: Jeremy Price Phone: (260) 244-6805 Email: jprice@dnr.IN.gov

Been away from this site awhile. Sorry for that been real busy. I had surgery back last July took me awhile to get back in the swing of things. I got word last late summer my hours at work were going to be cut. I finnaly had enough with my 10yr old Auto Parts job and searched around and landed a Ag parts job at a John Deere dealer that pays very well also has the best benefit package i have ever seen. In the middle of all this I lost a couple family members and a couple real good member friends (Sam and Felix) unexpectedly both to heart problems. Been a real life changing year. Looking forward to getting back to fishing and some warmer weather. Gonna pop in more regular now looking forward to chatting with yall again.

Decided I would take advantage of the overcast skies and put my G&G Blade Spinnerbait to work. Managed a nice fish but fishing is still slow. Water temps continue to drop a bit, but were still without a frost here. I think it will take a frost to get em feeding.

Had to try my luck today after a lure test, was there about a hour and finally got a nice 14"er to take. Felt good to get the tug going again been a while. I thought this fish was allot bigger at first it fought like a "Klingon warrier"! IMG_1096 by fishinphoto, on Flickr

Been very busy lately which is a good thing really, I got out earlier this week for a hour and got nothing but this eve I wiped the skunk off me finally. Throwing a 3/8 oz G&G Blade spinnerbait and caught a nice one and a just legal size one. Great feeling getting on a couple nice tuggers again! Btw if you have not got your lures from G&G lately your missing out on some real good tackle. ggbaitco.com IMG_0948 by fishinphoto, on Flickr IMG_0949 by fishinphoto, on Flickr

I still need to mount my flashlight but I got my red dot in the other day, so I got it mounted to co witness with the irons. I love the Vortex Sparc red dots and they have great customer service all for under $200.00 until I can afford a Aimpoint t1 micro anyway. I have put some rounds down range but nothing formal I will post detailed range report soon. Thanks to a fellow member here I am already starting a new ar project. Updates on it in the coming weeks.
