I bought a used ice shanty a couple of weeks ago and had been itching to use it. I actually used it once on the day I bought it and I quickly discovered that I needed to come up with a way to make it pull easier. I spent last wednesday evening building what is known as a "smitty sled" for it. Most smitty's are built using old ski's and some metal pipe but I was able to get some worn out plastic snowmobile skis from a friend of mine and built mine out of ABS plastic pipe. I gotta say it pulled so much easier with the ski's! I forgot to take a picture of it on skis but here is what it looks like setup and ready to fish... Anyhow, me and buddy got out to a local lake last thursday and picked up a mixed bag of gills, crappies and a whopper bullhead catfish. We actually got to the lake a little later than we wanted to and we barely caught the tail end of a really good bite. We stayed until about 10:30 and had constant fish on the graph but we couldn't find many that were interested. The bite was really light too and we were missing lots of fish. It was a fun night and I'm glad we were able to get out. Here's my first crappie of the season... And a few to dirty up knife for a few minutes...

Great report and nice mess, Matt. Thanks for sharing! If things don't cool down soon around here you might be getting some company up there.

Looks like a successful trip.
I'm glad to see you were able to find some skis.

I got on the DNR website last night to investigate the fish of the year program. Man, that bullhead is easily fish of the year material. I wish I would've taken some additional photos that I could submit. That sucker was 17" long and I'll bet was every bit of 3.5-4lbs. The state record is only 4.9lbs!
