Finally got off work early the other day and had some time to stop by Hillenbrand before it got dark out. I was amazed! I expected it to be more like Chinook FWA, which is where I spent a lot of time when I lived in Terre Haute. Chinook is pretty flat (for strip mine land) and only a few pits to choose from. Hillenbrand has some pretty nice hills and a lot more pits, and seems to be much larger. I bet it's beautiful there when everything turns green! And Midland pit is a lot bigger than I imagined!

I went through there for the first time this past summer. I had the same reaction. Very nice piece of land

I really can't wait to get back out there with my rod and kayak. My wife and I also checked out Goose Pond and GSSF yesterday. The sandhill cranes were at Goose Pond and it was an awesome thing to see. Thousands upon thousands of them. Didn't get much time to look around at GSSF but it also looked like heaven on earth. I'll never get bored here.

Just got my kayak a couple months ago and I plan to spend a lot of time over there next year. Feel free to PM me if you want some company fishing.

I feel pretty darn lucky to have this much local public land. Hopefully someday soon the state will add the 2000 acres of old strip mined land that surrounds our property to Hillenbrand. It has 3 big pits and numerous smaller ones. In the mean time there's plenty of places to explore though. If you guys get a chance, check out my Greene-Sullivan Challenge thread where I keep track of my progress on catching a keeper out of every local public fishing hole. It's been more of a challenge than I imagined with all the opportunities around here!

I may have to make a personal Greene-Sullivan Challenge for myself! That sounds fun. My wife asked me to buy her a kayak for the upcoming season. I think I've got her hooked too.
