One of the members over on IndianaAngler.com started a thread about the good old days of collecting your own bait and that maybe we need to go back to that. Here was my reply... That thread inspired me to pick a few catalpa worms this evening and give them a try again.

When I was growing up, as most of us did, anything that could fly, hop or swim became bait. I would catch grasshoppers, lightning bugs, caterpillars, tomato worms, crawdads, etc. to use as bait and then head to the river or pond that was just down the road from me. Lightning bugs didn't work too well but I did manage to catch a giant catfish one night on one. The best bait I can remember, other than crickets and worms, were the silkworms that would show up on myu neighbors tree every summer. I think they were called silkworms? They would be in a big white silky sack hanging up in the tree. Are those called silkworms? Those things were great bait! I wish I had time to gather bait like I did when I was a kid...now I can't even find time to fish

I have a catalpa tree in the yard. I haven't seen many of the worms this year, but last year they were everywhere.
I'd say they worked out pretty well for you. That is a dandy bluegill.

I've called them silkworms too, but I think they're actually tent caterpillars. If I can get my chores done today I'm gonna grab some more catalpa worms and go fish a new spot.

Took some catalpas to the Eel River last night, but nothing was interested other than 1 redhorse sucker that got off at the sandbar.

Do you guys access the Eel somewhere off 59? We have accessed it at the 59 bridge south of Clay City, but last night we were east of Howesville near the Clay/Greene line.

I used to fish that stretch all the time when I was a kid. I'm sure it has changed a lot from what it was 30 years ago. My great aunts neighbor was a big time catfisherman back then and he used to pull a lot of flatties out of there.
