I waited until it warmed up a bit this morning and then made the short drive to Hillenbrand FWA. Fished Front Lake and had to drill a few holes before I found any fish. Caught a couple keeper gills and a few dinks and then they shut off. Moved around a few times and then gave up around 1:30. Ice was probably 8 inches. Went home and had some lunch and then went down to Greene-Sullivan's Airline pit. Ice is still only about 4 inches plus an inch of slush ice on this pit because of the springs. Didn't mark any fish for a while and then when I finally did it bit and the fight was on! Got it halfway up from the bottom and whatever it was realized it was hooked and turned around and dove for the bottom and snapped my line! Not sure if it was a big rainbow, largemouth, catfish, or what. If I had to guess I'd say bass just from the way it fought. Took my favorite G&G horizontal jig with it. A video still of just before it turned and snapped my line... A little later a CO pulled up to check me. Got my wallet out as he was walking up and .....NO LICENSE!! I thought I had thrown my deer license away when season ended, but evidently I threw away my hunting/fishing combo because I still had a deer license in there. Luckily he was really cool and just looked it up for me. Hopefully tomorrow will be better!
