My plan was to spend the day at Shakamak, but for some reason I awoke with visions of saugeye in my head. I got on google earth to find a spot out of this crazy wind, and then drove to Sullivan. The spot I had picked was close to the boat ramp and I drilled a hole off the dock just to make sure of the ice. I didn't measure it, but it had to be 10 inches or more, although it looks like the lake has dropped since the ice has been on and there's an incline at the edge. I dropped the transducer and immediately marked fish, so I dropped down a bait. It was the usual onslaught of dink Sullivan crappie!
Could have filled my bucket with these...
I did catch one "keeper"...if you call 9 inches a keeper. All the rest were the usual 6 inch variety. Tried jigs, spoons, and a ratso and they would take anything. It was 14' off the dock and I wanted to venture out to try the deeper water, but the wind was whipping up the like crazy. I was having trouble getting my line back down even with a big hill to my back. Got sick of the wind and dink crappie and hit the road back to Shakamak.
Tried a spot out of the wind on Kickapoo and instantly caught a bruiser gill in 24fow, and then nothing.
Went to Shakamak Lake to a spot I knew would be out of the wind, and it was the same thing...caught one then nothing for a while. There was a couple other guys fishing the neck and one of them come over and struck up a conversation. They were from Fort Wayne and have been coming down since the 70's, but only had 10 between them and were getting ready to leave. As we were talking....I doubled and the bite was ON! I thought for sure they'd both be joining me, but they really did leave....although they did hesitate at the ice edge to watch me bring up a few more. I think I doubled three times while the bite was crazy. I quit early with 17 on the ice. The hot jig was once again the G&G horizontal, followed by a G&G glow jig.
It was too crazy for a while to get much video, but here's a clip.
