G'day guys, I haven't been on here for ages(sorry about that). Anyway, the reason I found this site in the first place was because I was on youtube looking up euro mounts and saw your method of burying the head for months, then cleaning it up. I just did my brothers buck today and took some pics of the process I use. I hope this helps you guys.
My brother shot a nice buck the other day and being the nice brother he is, he let me boil it out for a Euro mount. This has been done before on the forum, but not with pics as far as I know.
Remove the bottom jaw with a knife first. Then stick the antlers in the ground and grab a saw. start your cut at the first top teeth.
Which then leaves it looking like this
Now, pierce both eyes with a knife before you throw it in the boiler. If you don't, the liquid in the eye gets scalding hot and if you happen to squirt any over your arm/hand, it'll f***en hurt. Throw it in the pot as is(all hair still on)
Boil for about 1-1.5 hours, then check it. It is done when the meat releases and starts coming away from the skull. Do not over boil. This one took near 2 hours as I couldn't get the water boiling really hard. It should look something like this
Then, grab a knife and make 2 cuts up towards each coronet. The whole head skin can then be pulled off like a sock in one piece.
There will be a bit of sticky stuff on the skull and the eyes will need to be cut out. Remember, it will be f***ing hot. Scrape off as much left over sinew/meat as possible , then hit it with a gurney if possible. If it doesn't come off, put it back in the still hot water to soften things up a bit, then try again.
The cut profile from the side to see where I cut it. This one was cut deeper under the eye than normal due to the antlers sweeping back a fair bit
I then turn it over and attack the inside of the skull with a tomahawk to remove all the smelly bits inside. Just place the top of the skull on a bit of wood/bench, it won't break and tap away with the tomahawk, not real hard though. Pliers and a screw driver help too once you have broken it up with the tomahawk. I then hit the inside with the gurney again and it removes all the brain matter/nose sinew etc
Close up
This head hasn't been peroxided yet, but when I do, I will boil up some water, immerse the head in it for about a minute to get it nice and hot, then apply the peroxide with a toothbrush, 3-4 coats will have it white as. When it's hot, the peroxide seems to penetrate better.
Hope that helps someone.
