Today I wanted to try out my bowfishing kit(cajun) I got so we headed over to the dugger unit of Greene Sullivan. The kit's not much, I missed a few carp and then started fishing. I tied on an old bomber crankbait and started casting and caught this striper. We went up to one end of the lake where a creek runs in and there were bass piled up waiting for stuff to flow in. I caught a couple little ones and then hooked into a nice one with a tiny brushhog. Dad caught a perty little pumpkin seed on a crawler. On the way back to the ramp Dad was trolling a deep diving crankbait and caught a nice crappie. We had a good day of fishing!

I didn't realize there were stripers in the Dugger Unit I didn't either, Matt. Then last summer Spurlin's bait shop posted a pic of a 10 pounder on their facebook that was caught out there. I did some research and found a creel survey of one of the lakes that has a little bit of everything in it. (It's the lake we got ran off of by a storm last summer. ) This pit has a creek going through it that ends up in the Wabash, so any fish that are in the river can end up in the pit. I told Chase we're gonna start calling it "Box of Chocolates Lake." The pit is also full of spotted bass. We caught several. They weren't very big but real good fighters. We also caught a drum, bluegill, and saw a couple schools of asian carp. You would think it would be full of catfish too, but Chase and me catfished it last year and didn't catch one. I was talking to my nephew and him and a buddy caught some walleye at the Dugger Unit one time. He couldn't remember the name of the lake but I'd say it had to be this one. My favorite pic from the day.

Didn't get the video done and now it's bedtime/back to work. Was chatting with ericjeeper on facebook about Chase's striper and he thinks it's a white bass. www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/wbass_diagrams.phtmlChase even retrieved the carcass from the woods and checked the tongue. It was hard to tell with all the maggots, but it looked like 1 tooth patch on the tongue, which means white bass. The state record is only around 4 pounds, so Chase wants to go catch a bigger one now!

I stumbled across an interesting fish report for Busseron Creek from 2008 today while surfing around. Busseron Creek(pronounced "Bus Row" locally) is where the creek that goes through the Dugger Unit flows into before the Wabash. There were 29 different species sampled, including walleye, but all 11 walleye were hybrids. That means that they're more than likely coming from Sullivan Lake's tailwaters and not the Wabash River like I had thought. Part of the reason for the survey was to see if the muskie stocked in the Dugger Unit were finding their way to the creek, but none were found. They did sample a 25" and 30" 12lb striper from the creek. I also learned that Minnehaha has a pit(Goose) that's connected to the Busseron watershed that also has the asian carp and who knows what else in it. www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/files/fw-Busseron_Creek_2008_FMR.pdf
