Hey Guys,
I was thinking about trying my luck during Ohio's early goose season which runs September 1st thru the 15th.
Anyone have any advice for me? Anything about decoys, blinds, and calling would be appreciated.
I am trying this for the first time so would like to know some cheap ways to get into the sport. Like what is the minimum number of decoys I could be successful with?
I will be hunting farm fields. I'm not even sure on what time of day is best.

Good luck with that. Chase and me have been trying to get into it for years and neither one of us has killed a goose yet. I think the only "cheap" way to get into field hunting would be to go with someone that's already doing it. Even with that you're looking at buying a layout blind for around a 100 bucks, unless you can borrow one. Sorry for all the negativity. It's just not something we've had any luck with. Maybe some of the successful goose hunters on here will have some ideas.

troy whenever i didnt have a field blind this year we substituted a cheap sheet ( color of the terrain your hunting) and a camo backback for a head rest and did it tht way. your slower on the draw but hey get em feet down getting ready to land and you can spare a second

same as troy pretty much, the best thing you could do is try to get a seasoned hunter to take you

Calling is key. If you don't know how to call it will be tough unless you have those huge groups coming in. My advice would be to drive around and scout the fields with binos the day before you hunt and see where they are, set up there the next morning in a layout blind with as many decoys as you can buy. Them goose decoys sure ain't cheap. My favorite way of doing it is jump shooting. I like to do that on a couple ponds after a day of dove shooting.

check out cabelas closer to season and check the bargin cave and u can find good deals. for early season the geese are dumb we go out with 2 dozen deeks and layout blind a kill them all day. u dont have to call that much either. pick u up a zink power clucker for 30 bucks and blow the heck outa it...

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have a sort of unique opportunity because my uncle's farm has pretty consistent flocks landing in the fields every night and no one around the area really hunts waterfowl. I'm planning on just building a makeshift blind and setting up where they fly over everyday. We'll see how it goes.
