Chase and me got up and went down to Greene-Sullivan State Forest this morning to try for some ducks. We went to a pit I know stays open year 'round, but we were running a little late and someone beat us to it. It's a shame too, there was ducks everywhere. We drove all over the forest looking for more open water but none was to be found. We ended up at a pit that had ice thin enough to break with the boat and actually had some birds flying around while setting up, but nothing after that. I was wanting to try out the "Lucky Duck" decoy, but the bottom there was rock and I couldn't get it to stay up. Might have to get a floating base for it.

Chase and me went back to the forest this morning. We got up at 5am so we'd be sure and get the "hot spot." We went up to hook up the little camo boat and I couldn't find the 7-Way round pin to 4-Flat trailer light adapter. I started back tracking down the road and found it.........in a million pieces. I had left it on the bumper the other day when we went. We decided to just bring the kayak for a "retriever" and headed down to the pits. We were the first one there and got all our stuff out and I got my waders on and went to put the dekes out and........ice. Now tell me this; how was this pit open water the other day BEFORE the warm temps and rain came, and now it's skimmed over in ice?? I don't get it. We packed back up and checked the north end and there was some open water there, so we set up. Just before shooting time I switched on the Edge Lucky Duck motorized decoy and it ran about 10 seconds and shut off. This thing is turning out to be a total piece of crap and I'm gonna contact the company about it so they can fix it or get my money back. A little before sunrise we had some birds swing through, but not close enough for a shot. After that it was clear skies and not a bird in sight. Around 9 we decided to give it up and I walked back to the truck. Right when I opened the door I heard Chase hit the goose call and hear geese. I'm looking up for the geese and see a bunch of ducks and hear Chase start calling to them. It was a flock of 15-20 mallards and Chase was bringing them right in. They made 2 big circles and then on the 3rd their wings were cupped and they were coming down! They were coming right to him, but there was something they didn't like and they ended up landing about 200 yards away in the only other open water on the pit. Chase had set the camera up in front of him and when I walked back down I noticed a glare coming off it, so that might have been what made them flare. We decided to stay a while longer and ended up calling 3 or 4 geese in, but they only got within 60 yards or so; too far for the duck loads we were packin. Later we had hundreds of geese fly over from east to west, but they were up high and weren't interested. This is the second year ever that I've bought waterfowl stamps and I'm yet to kill my first bird. Times running out too. Packing it in.......

Troy, Let's get together again and get you a duck. No need in buying a stamp if you can't use it. Let me know what your schedule is like.

This thing is turning out to be a total piece of crap and I'm gonna contact the company about it so they can fix it or get my money back. I contacted Edge by Expedite about my decoy problems today via email and recieved a reply from a technician within 15 minutes and a new motor is being shipped today.

It's the last day of duck season here in Indiana. I might go walk a creek and see if I can jump one.
